It is one of the two largest Petrified Forests in the world (the other one is in Arizona), created 20 million years ago after an intense volcanic eruption when lava and ash covered the whole area. Petrified Forest lies in an area of 150 sq.m in the western peninsula of Lesvos, close to the famous villages of Sigri, Eresos, and Antissa. Trees, small and large, lying or standing on the ground with their branches and roots fossilized. Trees seem like someone placed them there on purpose to create a unique scenery though scientists state that the trees were petrified in their original position.
